Volunteer Responsibilities
- Must complete a volunteer application and waiver.
- Must keep track of hours volunteered through the shelter's log book.
- Must be at least 16 years of age, or at least 10 years & accompanied by a parent.
- Must complete 10 hours every six months to be considered a current volunteer.
- Must read new information provided on volunteer stand in order to keep you updated
on the new procedures.
- Must always obey safety rules, such as not socializing with animals whose kennels
say staff only.
- Must understand the possible disease risk and should have current vaccinations for
animals at home.
- Must understand the potential human health hazards and should have a current tetanus
vaccination
- Must report any injuries recieved while on shelter premises immediately to staff.
- Must retain confidentiality in the work of the shelter and dealings with the public
- Must be a reflection of the values and standards set by DCHS and should feel comfortable
with our policies and procedures.
- Always remember that your input and your time is valuable to us.
- The animal sheltering industry is a very stressful and very emotional environment.
While we try to support, encourage, and recognize our volunteers, in reality, this
does not always happen. Please consider the stress we are ALL under, and do not
get discouraged.
- Finally, volunteering at DCHS is a big responsibility, but its rewards and pleasures
may become the most gratifying work in your life.
