Lost & Found Pets

In the United States,
1 in 3 family pets will go missing in their lifetime.

What should I do…

  • The first few hours are crucial when trying to locate a lost or missing pet. If you submit a “Lost Pet” report here on our site, we will check it whenever a new pet is brought to our shelter.

We have also seen great community support on the Facebook Page “Dunn County Pets — Missing and Found” and many pets that are posted there are reunited with owners.

In the State of Wisconsin, pets with unknown owners must wait in “impound” for 4 days. After those 4 days, ownership of the pet transfers to the shelter, which is why it is crucial to submit a “Lost Pet” report as soon as you notice your pet is missing.

  • If you find a lost or stray dog or cat, we highly recommend asking the neighbors nearby if they recognize the pet. In most cases, pets are found within a short distance to their home.

If you submit a “Found Pet” report here on our site, then we can cross-reference it with the Lost Pet reports and help get the pet home safely.

If you find the pet in Dunn County and cannot locate an owner, please call our shelter at (715) 232-9790. If we are contracted by the municipality where the pet was found, then we can care for it at the shelter.

  • Currently, DCHS is contracted by the majority of Dunn County municipalities to take in and care for stray or lost pets.

If you find a pet in the Township of Tiffany, Township of Grant, Township of New Haven, Township of Rock Creek, Village of Colfax, Village of Ridgeland, or Village of Downing, please call the local clerk’s office.

  • Is it safe and looks healthy?

Have you seen a mom in the last few hours?

If the answer is yes to both of these questions, please leave the kitten where it is for now. Although we appreciate your desire to help, a kitten’s best chance of survival is with its mother. Give us a call if you have any questions or concerns.

If you are concerned with the kitten’s safety and/or health, and have not seen an adult cat nearby, please call the shelter at (715)232-9790

  • Microchips are a simple, effective way for animal shelters and veterinary clinics to identify where your pet belongs. Each microchip is as small as a grain of rice; your pet won’t know it’s there, but we'll always know where home is. Microchips are inserted just below the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. When your pet is brought to a shelter or veterinary clinic as a “stray” or lost pet, the staff there will scan for a microchip.

You can schedule an appointment at the shelter for inserting a microchip into your cat or dog for $35. Are you a DCHS Member? Members can get a microchip for only $18.

Dogs with accurate microchip information are 2.4 times more likely to get reunited with their owner after going missing; cats with accurate microchip information are 21.4 times more likely.

DCHS also offers low-cost microchipping twice a year, thanks to Markquart Motors Menomonie. Check out our Upcoming Events to see if one is coming up!
